5 Ways to Land a Hot Job in Tech
5 Ways to Land a Hot Job in Tech As cold as it is outside right now, tech has never been hotter. Not a day goes by without an article about some sizzling new startup or the latest sexy perk that Googleâs offering. Too bad youâre stuck freezing on the outside, your breath fogging up the glass as you look in at that roaring tech fire. After all, what tech company is going to hire a non-programmer like you? Turns out they all will. Because non-tech roles make up nearly 75% of all the jobs in the industry. After all, whoâs going to support all those programmers by marketing and selling their programs? But first you need to figure out where you fit. And donât worry, itâs not all just sales and marketing roles either. So hereâs a cheat sheet to 5 scorching, unconventional jobs in the hottest industry around: 1) Youâre a consultant As much as jean-clad techies like to make fun of corporate types and their suits, they hire âem by the boatload. Especially because it can actually be cheaper to âbuyâ a whole team of former consultants than rent them through their pricey firm. So if youâre a strategic consultant, check out a role called Business Operations (AKA âBizOpsâ). These are the brains behind big decisions like which country to expand to or which new product to launch. Which means lots of opportunities to show off your wicked Excel and PowerPoint skills! Sample role: Yelp Analyst, Business Operations Strategy Help Yelp figure out how to drive more reviews and revenue. 2) Youâre a banker Just like traditional consultants belong in tech, so do their financial brethren. Thatâs because tech companies have an insatiable appetite for gobbling each other up. Whether itâs Facebook scarfing down Instagram or Microsoft slurping up Minecraft, M+A is all the rage. Which is where Corporate Development (AKA âCorpDevâ) comes in. Because if youâve got experience leading similar deals in other industries, chances are you can do the exact same thing in tech from sizing up opportunities to negotiating the perfect price. Sample role: LinkedIn Manager, Corporate Development Ensure that LinkedIn snaps up the next hot startup. 3) Youâre all about win-win Of course, there are a million sales jobs in tech. But what if you love doing deals, but not necessarily carrying a quota? Is there some way to focus on creating a bigger pie, not just earning a bigger slice? Welcome to the world of Business Development (AKA âBizDevâ notice a theme here? ;). This roleâs all about doing deals between two companies where they both come out stronger. For instance, a BizDev manager at Google might have closed the recent deal with Ford to build a new self-driving car together. Or Airbnb might be doing the same with owners of large apartment complexes. Either way, a pervasive sense of optimism and a sixth sense for opportunity clearly come in handy! Sample role: Amazon Appstore UK 3rd Party Business Development Manager Partner with developers to help more apps make more money on Amazonâs Appstore. 4) Youâre naturally empathic Ever bought a piece of technology but watched it sit around and gather dust? Or get forced to adopt new software at work but had no idea how to use it? If so, you might have the makings of a great Customer Success leader. So many SaaS companies rely upon recurring subscriptions these days (everyone from Adobe to Slack) that high churn rates (customers canceling, usually due to low adoption) can be a real killer. Which is why Customer Success is the hottest non-technical role in tech. Much more than just a customer service position, you work hand-in-hand with clients to understand their needs, get their users to actually use your product, and keep them renewing month after month. Sample role: Facebook at Work Customer Success Manager Advise early-adopting companies on how best to leverage Facebookâs new corporate At Work tool. 5) You know where talentâs hiding OK, so there are a bunch of hot jobs in tech. But theyâre not going to fill themselves. Thatâs where you, the Tech Recruiter, come in. Because the war for talent is raging across all fronts right now as firms fight for the best execs, programmers, and business people. And so if youâre quick with a welcoming smile and even quicker with a LinkedIn search, you can help any number of tech companies stay just one step ahead of the competition. Sample role: BlaBlaCar Global Recruiter Keep BlaBlaCar rolling with fresh talent all around the world. There you have it: Five different paths all leading to a hot tech job. So no need to remain stuck on the outside, looking in. Come out of the cold this new year and join the tech inferno! Author: Jeremy Schifeling is the CEO of breakinto.tech, a site for anyone who wants to launch a tech career, regardless of background. Learn how Jeremy landed jobs at Apple and LinkedIn through his free, step-by-step course.

Develop a community to evangelize your brand - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Develop a community to evangelize your brand - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career What if there were hundreds of people around the world that all spoke your language and were willing to communicate your message to others you may not be able to reach? An evangelist is an individual who serves as the outside voice of your company. Evangelists are created through mutual interest on a given subject and are of high value to any corporate brand or Personal Brand. As you decide which niche you have a passion for, you should keep in mind who else has preached on that subject, through blogging or articles you read. In order to be more knowledgeable in your current position, you should seek the combined knowledge of those that surround you and bring them into your community. A blog is a great starting point for accomplishing this and when you build a community around your blog, you must strategize on how you will keep that network stable. You are one person and can only accomplish so much in a given day, which is why your community of evangelists will help virally penetrate the internet to communicate your brand message. In terms of a corporation, as a business grows, more assets must be hired to offset the accumulating workload. By branding yourself, developing content and gathering evangelists through networking, you are taking a crucial step in your career. That step is communicating your accomplishments and positioning yourself as a leader in not just your network, but to the larger population. Take my magazine for example. Personal Branding Magazine is about the Personal Brands that write columns or send relevant material to be included in an issue. These contributors (you know who you are!) are evangelists to the concept of Personal Branding and receive recognition for their efforts. They are also aiding in the marketing effort by promoting it on their blogs. So not only are they sharing their valuable knowledge through the articles they write, but they are letting others know it exists. Lesson: As you grow your network, you should discover new ways to collaborate with them and turn them from regular members of your network to evangelists. Another great example of this concept is what William Arruda has done with his Certified Personal Branding Strategists. Ive been blogging for quite some time and have great knowledge of Personal Branding, as well as those that share the same interest. William took his own position on Personal Branding and developed Reach (his business), where people who wanted to learn skills associated with the subject and take an assessment and become a consultant. Whats genius about what hes done is that he is able to do more with less, by leveraging the combined knowledge, enthusiasm and reach of these individuals that pass the test. They are evangelists to William because they promote his knowledge through their websites and position him for success. He has even recruited them to take part in a special project, known as the 2007 Personal Branding Global Telesummit, which takes well known authors and speakers and brings them together, under the umbrella of Personal Branding. Ive been leading the sponsorship team for this even and look forward to the results. Here are some of Williams Evangelists: Wendy Terwelp Paul Copcott Krishna De Deb Dib Susan Guarneri Cindy Kraft Bonnie Kurka Dorothea Stuart Jason Alba Walter Akana There are over 200 evangelists, so I listed the ones Im familiar with and are in my network. Through creativity and shared interests, you can create a valuable network of evangelists that appreciate and respect your work and are willing to tell others about it. Final Note: Be the one that creates opportunities by bringing others together for a shared goal.

4 Things To Do To Immediately Appear More Confident
4 Things To Do To Immediately Appear More Confident I have always been fascinated by the power of body language. Think about it. How many times have you made conclusions and assumptions about someone ´s capabilities, trustworthiness or opinions just by looking at them, probably only based on how they sit, stand or hold their arms? The truth is that we all do that, sometimes without even realizing it. And one of the most useful messages you can send through body language is confidence. Confidence is probably one of the key success drivers in life. Many studies have proven that those who appear more confident achieve higher status in life than their less confident colleagues. So to help you quickly appear more confident at work or when facing any challenges in life, Ive selected my favorite tricks to help you send a strong confidence message through your body language in just a few seconds. Stand up straight! This is the first one in the list for a reason. Good posture has a massive influence in how others perceive you. Standing up straight projects confidence and authority, while slouching makes you look unprofessional and disinterested. And the best part is that by rolling your shoulders back you will not only be seen by others as more confident but you will also FEEL more confident, since in this situation your body sends messages to your brain that make you feel more powerful â" and just by keeping a good posture! Keep your feet separate You might have never noticed, but standing with your feet too close together can make you appear timid. So send a strong message to your audience. Make sure you keep your feet aligned with your hips and shoulders. This will keep you more balanced physically and will shows more confidence than if your legs are crossed or together. Keep your chin and head up. Ever noticed how kings and queens in the movies always have their heads a bit up, almost in an arrogant way? Of course you don ´t want to do that. But this is just an example of how confident people are always looking up, never down. Not at the ground, at the table or at the iPhone (you do that a lot, don ´t you?). Here is a trick that may help you. Pretend that there is a string holding the crown of your head up. Go on and try it now! ?? Always keep eye contact Last but not least, strong eye contact is one of the greatest indicators of confidence. If this is something you struggle with, try looking at the other persons eyes for two seconds, then looking at their nose for two seconds, and then start again. With this trick, the other person wont be able to tell that youre not looking directly at their eyes the entire time, and you will definitively appear more confident in the eyes of your listener. Practice, practice, practice! I believe that for everything in life, the more you practice, the more you get used to something until you start doing it in an unconscious way. So if you want to start using your body language to appear more confident, start practicing these tricks all the time. When walking to the bus stop, ordering a coffee or trying to convince your friends to watch that movie youve been wanting to! Image: Main

Private Health Insurance for Every Woman
Private Health Insurance for Every Woman A lot of discussion has been held recently about the cost and availability of health insurance for workers. In the US, employers with over fifty staff are now legally required to provide health insurance for their employees, but that still leaves out a great deal of people, including a good portion of you, our readership. Fortunately, for those of you still building your careers or launching out on your own, there is still the option to purchase privately-owned health insurance In the US, just as we wrote about way before the rollout of Obamacare. For US citizens, these plans are the ones you will find in the Health Insurance Marketplace as part of the roll-out of the Affordable Care Act. Other countries also have individual providers and options, such as the UK-based Health-on-line. Who Needs Private Health Insurance? If youâre reading this, odds are that you do. Nobody expects to undergo a major illness or injury, but they can happen at any time, and enduring one while uninsured can lead to financial ruin. There are many people who are currently going without insurance because they feel they canât afford it, when in truth it is more likely that they canât afford not to. The biggest groups that require private insurance are: The unemployed, part-time workers, and self-employed people, as well as retirees and small-business owners. Fortunately, for many people, there are potential subsidies and assistance programs that can relieve or eliminate the cost of insurance, depending on where you live and your income. Many websites are available to help you determine which programs you qualify for, so make the most of your available resources. Things To Consider When Shopping for Private Health Insurance Just like any other important purchase or investment, there are many factors to choosing a plan which provides you the most coverage value for your dollar. These are questions that every woman must ask herself, because no one understands your needs and your body the way you do. If possible, consult your doctor, which may help you get a better sense of what is needed. Find out if the plan you are considering offers prescription drug coverage, as well as the co-payment on drugs, and whether name-brand drugs are covered, or only generics. Will the plan have a limit to your yearly doctorâs office visits, and what is your office visit co-pay? Find out the co-pay for hospital stays, ER visits, and professional services like x-rays and lab tests. Do you require the option to add a vision and dental coverage, or pregnancy benefits? What about specialty services like physical or chiropractic therapy? If you have a doctor that you like, try to find a plan where your doctor is part of the provider network. Shopping for private health insurance is imposing and frightening at first, but it doesnât have to be. With a little basic knowledge of what you require, and the wealth of tools at your disposal, private health insurance is easier and more affordable than ever. Any professional woman knows to always be prepared for the worst in her career, now itâs time to do the same for your health.

3 Myths That May Be Stalling Your Networking - Hire Imaging
3 Myths That May Be Stalling Your Networking - Hire Imaging Those who know me, know that Iâm a stickler for networking in a job search â" and in career management overall. The time to network is always. Rather than talk about the details of networking here, letâs look briefly at some of the common perceptions that often interfere with your ability to get the most out of networking. Here are three of what I believe to be the most pervasive â" and most self-defeating â" misconceptions about the process. The only people you should focus on in your networking are people who are in a position to offer you a job. This concept is probably the most common and self-defeating fallacy about networking. True, your ultimate goal when you network is to gain access to people who are in a position to offer you a job. But networking itself is all about making connections with people who, indirectly or directly, can improve your chance of gaining that access. This is important. Donât set limits on who should â" or shouldnât â" be part of your network. Just about everyone you know or might meet, regardless of what he or she does for a living, could be in a position to hear about job opportunities. Donât curtail your chances by underestimating the potential value of anyone you know. You have to know the âright peopleâ to network successfully. There is, frankly, a ring of truth to this statement. That said, it is misleading. The basic purpose of networking, remember, is to gain access to the so-called âright people.â And if there is a single recipe for effective networking, it rests in your ability to create a set of connections that will eventually give you access to the people who are in a position to offer you a job. Networking is in its essence, a step-by-step process versus a random reach-out or connecting. You meet one person, who gives you a name of someone else, who gives you yet another name, and so on. Your concrete goal is to connect with a key person. Not having immediate access to that key person doesnât wedge you out of the process. It simply presses you to be more creative, resourceful and patient. Strangers resent it when you ask them to help you in your job search. Iâll say it. Itâs not a perfect world â" not by any stretch. There will be times when you call someone or meet someone at an event, who will try to make you feel guilty simply because you have the nerve to ask him or her for help in your job search. Fortunately, though, most people â" even people you donât know that well â" will be surprisingly cooperative, as long as you approach them respectfully and make reasonable requests. Yes, networking can be hard work â" especially if you cringe at the thought of asking people you donât know for favors. But networking isnât difficult in the sense that playing the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D Major is difficult. In other words, you donât need special skills or training to network effectively. It helps to be organized and systematic. And when youâre face to face with â" or talking to, someone whose help youâre seeking, you must be able to introduce yourself and explain your situation in a brief, clear way that puts people at ease. The main thing to remember about networking is the resolve to do it. You canât let yourself be thwarted by the tentativeness that might normally prevent you from introducing yourself to strangers who could possibly be helpful to you. You have to face the possibility that, yes, some of the people you approach arenât going to be as helpful as you would like â" including those people you think you can rely on. But this is what you must always remember: The worst thing that can happen in your efforts to shape and nurture a personal network is that someone you approach wonât be willing or able to help. Thatâs it. On the other hand, as youâll see the more you network, most people you approach will, in fact, be willing to help. The connections are there to be made. You often just have to pick up the phone.

How to Ruin Your Online Career Brand in a Nanosecond
How to Ruin Your Online Career Brand in a Nanosecond By now you have probably heard the story about Trina Thompson, the Monroe College graduate who is suing the school for the $70,000 she paid in tuition because she hasnt found employment since she received her bachelors degree in April. Much of the buzz around the story revolves around commentary that Ms. Thompsons expectations are unrealistic, she doesnt seem to have a grasp of the current economic factors that could be affecting her job search, she doesnt understand the nuances of an effective job search, she has a sense of entitlement, and her academic track record pales in comparison to many of the other recent grads she is competing against. But one topic that I havent heard people discussing is the fact that Ms. Thompson, who probably had little to no online presence before last week, now has a very distinct online presence50 pages on Google in factall of it dedicated to this story and most of it fairly negative coverage. Overnight she has gone from a digital unknown to wha t William Arruda and Kirsten Dixson, authors of Career Distinction, would call digitally dissed.People have short memories, but Google and other search engines have changed all that. Its very easy to learn about a person and their past by doing a simple online search. And decision makers do this on a regular basis. As a matter of fact, a recent Execunet survey revealed that 86% of recruiters surveyed Googled candidates before calling them in for an interview and 44% of those recruiters eliminated candidates based on information they found out about them online. With 50 pages of bad press in front of her, it looks like Ms. Thompson will have a lot more to blame for her stalled job search than the perceived inaction of Monroe College.
